Description Xanten is a historic town in the North Rhine-Westphalia state of Germany, located in the district of Wesel. Xanten is known for the Archaeological Park (one of the largest in the world), its medieval picturesque city centre with Xanten Cathedral and many museums, its large man-made lake for various watersport activities as well as high standard of living. It is visited by approximately one million tourists a year. Big events include the Xantener Sommerfestspiele (a prestigious classical music festival lasting 2-3 weeks every year), the annual Xantener Montmartre where artists from all over the world show their latest works as well as the annual German sandcastle-building championship. Xanten is one of Germany's most affluent communitites. The Rmermuseum is situated on the historic site of the Roman city, Colonia Ulpia Traiana. It was built on the excavated foundations of the entrance hall to the public baths. The size and the shape of the modern building corresponds to the original footprint. For the greater part the exhibition is displayed in galleries and platforms that are suspended from the ceiling. Therefore, inside the museum one can also experience the enormous dimensions of the original architecture. New, astonishing perspectives are presented again and again. The round tour features exhibits the Roman history of Xanten from Julius Caesars time to the period of the Franks. By displaying more than 2,500 exhibits and by using modern media in an exhibition space of about 2,000 m, a vivid picture of Roman daily life in Lower Germany is presented. The remains of a Roman boat that is suspended from the ceiling 12 meters aloft, are fascinating. Visitors shouldnt miss the georgous large-sized mural and the Roman cannon, the oldest and best preserved that has been found yet. Spanish oil amphorae, silver tableware, pottery and a considerable inventory of army weapons and equipment is on display
